Influenza
Influenza and influenza-associated illness can be especially severe during pregnancy. As a result and in accordance with NACI and the SOGC, we recommend vaccinating all pregnant women without regard to the trimester of pregnancy. Flu vaccination during pregnancy can also provide protection to your infant during their first six months of life.
Pertussis (whooping cough)
Infants have high susceptibility to pertussis infection and are at greatest risk of hospitalization and death. Routine immunization in Ontario for pertussis begins at 2 months of age. Until then, infants are unprotected and vulnerable. Immunization for pertussis in pregnancy is safe and provides protection to infants until they receive their own immunizations. Scientific evidence recommends vaccination between 27 and 32 weeks of gestation although if unable, between 13 weeks and delivery could also be of benefit.
COVID19
Like influenza, COVID19 infection can be significantly worse when pregnant. Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is recommended. Guidelines will evolve over time but typically it is recommended to get a booster 3-6 months from your last immunization or infection, depending on your overall risk profile. mRNA vaccination is safe in pregnancy.
